ATFL News

JANUARY 2011

Dear After the Finish Line Supporters,

Happy New Year! After the Finish Line wishes you the best in 2011. We start the year with wishes and goals. I hope you include the ex-racehorses in your thoughts. Together we can give yesterday's champions the chance they deserve to transition off the racetrack and excel in a new career.

With your help, After the Finish Line awarded monthly emergency funds and yearly grants to 39 rescue organizations in 15 states helping over 200 horses in 2010. We provided funding for surgery, critical care, farrier, dental, winter blankets, transportation and x-ray expenses. Funding also awarded for auction rescues, dispersal sales, hay & feed and boarding expenses. Your donations to ATFL will enable us to help more ex-racehorses in 2011.

**NEW DATE** After the Finish Line’s 2011 Comedy Fundraiser, “Stand Up For Horses”, will be on St. Patrick’s Day, Thursday, March 17, 2011 at the IMPROV ~ Los Angeles. Our silent auction is from 6:30 – 8:00 pm and show time is from 8:00 – 9:30 pm. Return our Invitation with your payment or use PayPal. If you can’t attend, please consider making a donation. You can also donate a silent auction item. Come join the fun!

After the Finish Line awards yearly grants to qualified 501 (c) 3 rescue organizations across the United States. If your organization saves, cares for or rehabilitates the ex-racehorses for a second career you can contact dawn@afterthefinishline.org to request a grant application. Please include your website address in your email. Applications must be postmarked by February 5, 2011 and received no later than February 13, 2011 to be considered.

This month ATFL is awarding emergency funds to help horses whose adoptions did not work out. Sometimes horses don't find their forever homes when first adopted. But in time, these horses will find the adopter of their dreams. The rescues need funding to cover their unexpected expenses and After the Finish Line is here to help.

ATFL will award funds to The Golden Carrot for Our Fair Lad. This 6-year-old ex-racehorse earned $3,400 in 6 starts at Golden Gate and Bay Meadows. A tendon injury ended his career and his new owner could not properly care for him. At the rescue he will gain weight and rehabilitate his injury. Laddie should have no riding limitations. ATFL will provide funds for a vet check, farrier and hay and feed.

Hooked for Life stopped racing due to being foot sore. He was adopted but returned to Thoroughbred Retirement of Tampa because his adoptive family could not afford him. A spider or snakebite caused an infection on his hock. Hook was admitted to the equine clinic to treat the infected soft tissue. He is responding well and the prognosis is good. AFTL will award funds for his procedures, his clinic stay and medication.

Moon Shoot was originally rescued at auction. This 22-year-old ex-racehorse was returned to Whimsical Equine Rescue because the adopters could no longer afford her. ATFL will provide sponsorship funds for Moon Shoots board, hay and feed, new blanket, farrier, supplements and medication.

As our donations grow we can help more horses. ATFL wants to ensure a quality of life for Thoroughbreds when their racing careers are over. Please recommend After the Finish Line. Thank you for your ongoing commitment and support of our efforts.

Sincerely,

dawn mellen
