ATFL News

APRIL 2011

Dear After the Finish Line Supporters,

Donors consider the fiscal responsibility and management of a non-profit when deciding which ones to support. They want their funds to be used to support the cause, not large or unnecessary overhead expenses. After the Finish Line is an all volunteer non-profit dedicated to helping Thoroughbred horses that can no longer race or breed. We enrich the lives of the Thoroughbred ex-racehorses.

After the Finish Line invites you to our 2011 Annual Charity Fundraiser, “A Tribute to the Majesty of Thoroughbreds” on Thursday, August 4th from 5:30 pm to 9:30 pm in Del Mar, California. We will host a reception with entertainment, silent and live auctions and dinner. Join ATFL in making our fundraiser a success by donating in-kind items, gift cards or services for our silent and live auctions. Contact dawn@afterthefinishline.org if you want to be a sponsor or volunteer.

Our fundraiser documents, Save the Date, Invitation, Menu, Donor Letter and Donor Agreement are also located on the home page of our website, www.afterthefinishline.org.  If you live outside of California or the local area, you can still help the horses by sending a monetary donation or auction item for the fundraiser.

Congratulations to our 2011 grant recipients: CANTER New England, Illinois Equine Humane Center, White Rock Horse Rescue, CANTER Ohio, ReRun, TROTT, Harmony and Hope Horse Rescue, CANTER California, Whimsical Horse Rescue, Southern California Thoroughbred Rescue, Friends of Ferdinand, Mountain View Rescue, New Dawn Livestock Rescue and CANTER Michigan. Our grant funding ensures that more horses can be saved and receive the care they need. These organizations requested funds for hay and feed, in-take evaluations, monthly board, dental and farrier expenses, medication, vaccines and supplements, x-rays and surgery, training expenses, blankets, auction rescues and transportation.

After the Finish Line is a year-round funding source for rescue organizations. Grants are awarded in April. We also award monthly emergency funds to several rescue organizations in each of the remaining 11 months of the year. Contact dawn@afterthefinishline.org to learn more.

Fins Up was the winner of the After the Finish Line Hunter Stake at the Thoroughbred Celebration Horse Shows in Virginia. His Jockey Club name is Strong Tower and he retired from racing last May as a 3 year old. Fins Up had 6 starts at Delaware Park, Penn National and Parx, yet didn't show promise as a racehorse. When his owners retired him, Fins Up transitioned to the show ring and now competes in horse shows.

This month the Thoroughbred ex-racehorses competed in the show ring instead of on the racetrack in Del Mar, CA at the Del Sol Classic horse show. ATFL is also promoting the Thoroughbreds ex-racers on the west coast as they excel in second careers as Hunters & Jumpers. Seize the Day and Best Man were both winners! Bring your ex-racer into the Winners' Circle at the next Del Sol Classic horse show on August 17-18.

After the Finish Line is proud to announce our partnership with John Henry: The Steel Driving Racehorse. Released by Rainstorm Entertainment, this feature length documentary reveals the strength and determination that drove John Henry to be a winner and a legend. The film is being released through racetrack gift shops and online at, www.johnhenrymovie.com. A portion of all proceeds will benefit ATFL.

After the Finish Line was created for Thoroughbreds that have no means of support after their racing careers are over. As our donations grow we can help more horses. Thank you for trusting your donations to our organization.

Sincerely,

dawn mellen
