OCTOBER 2011

Dear After the Finish Line Supporters,

After the Finish Line has 4 fundraisers during the Holiday season and we welcome your participation. Please consider making a donation to After the Finish Line for year-end tax purposes if you are unable to join us. The Thoroughbreds welcome your support.

Our next fundraiser is the sixth annual Race for the Rescues. This road running race and fun walk will be held at The Rose Bowl in Pasadena on Sunday, October 23rd. This is a   fundraiser and adoption day for the homeless and abandoned ex-racehorses, dogs and cats of Los Angeles. Last year 2,200 people participated. To make a tax-deductible donation or sign up to race or walk, follow these instructions. Every racer who signs up on line receives a T-shirt. Together we can give many deserving horses a home for the Holidays.

Seventeen off the track Thoroughbreds competed at the Del Sol Classic Horse Show  in the After the Finish Line Thoroughbred Championships. The top finishers in the Hunter division were Teachers Pet and Chocolate Diamond, Best Man and Caliber finished on top in the Jumper division. The riders appreciated having a Thoroughbred series that allowed their horses to be recognized for their accomplishments and receive prize money.  CONGRATULATIONS to all the Thoroughbreds and riders that competed in this first year of competition.

After the Finish Line awards monthly emergency funds to rescue organizations to help with the expenses of caring for their ex-racehorses until they are adopted. Thoroughbred rescue organizations receive daily requests to take horses into their programs. These organizations are experiencing a decline in donations and adoptions
and an increase in hay and feed costs and horses being returned from adopters.

In response to the needs of the rescue organizations, After the Finish Line awarded October emergency funds to two California rescue organizations. Southern California Thoroughbred Rescue is caring for 20 off the track Thoroughbreds that raced throughout the United States. The majority of these horses were rescued at auctions. Each horse requires months of rehabilitation before it can be trained or adopted. Some will be permanent residents due to racing injuries. ATFL will award funding to assist with their monthly hay expense.

GEVA is a Thoroughbred rescue organization located in Northern California. They care for 32 off the track Thoroughbreds. The majority of these horses will remain in sanctuary due to racing injuries. ATFL will award funding to assist with their monthly hay and feed expenses.

Weemissfrankie, the 2-year-old California filly who won two Grade I races, is set to compete in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies. She is wearing After the Finish Line’s new cap. The proceeds of these caps support ATFL’s efforts to save, rehabilitate and care for off the track Thoroughbreds as they transition into a second career. Please contact dawn@afterthefinishline.org to order a cap in black or stone

After the Finish Line was created for Thoroughbreds that have no means of support when their racing or breeding careers are over. Thank you for your donation to help the ex-racehorses.

Sincerely,
