ATFL News

December 2011

Happy Holidays from After the Finish Line! This month we have special presents for the rescue organizations. ATFL is sending surprise Holiday donations to 24 rescue organizations to show our appreciation for their commitment to the Thoroughbred ex-racehorses in their care. This demanding work does not go unnoticed and ATFL applauds their dedication to our equine friends.

In 2011, After the Finish Line awarded 70 grants and monthly emergency funds. We supported the efforts of rescue organizations in 16 states helping over 300 horses. We funded nearly twice as many organizations as compared to last year.  ATFL provides year round funding to rescue organizations dedicated to the welfare of Thoroughbreds when their racing or breeding careers are over.

After the Finish Line is grateful for your year-long support. Over 1,000 supporters attended one or more of our 14 fundraisers and awareness events this year. We still have several Holiday fundraisers that include ATFL Caps, OTTB Designs, Cards by Marcy and Wire Players.

Also, join ATFL in celebrating The Gift of Life fundraiser. When you purchase The Gift of Life Thoroughbred cards as a Holiday present, you are making a tax-deductible donation to ATFL in the name of a family member, a friend or co-worker who cares about the welfare horses. Your donation will give ex-racehorses the opportunity at a second career with the love of a new owner.  You can add your own message inside the card. This is not a store bought gift. It is a gift from the heart.

I attended the November Thoroughbred Celebration Horse Shows in Virginia. It is the premier off the track Thoroughbred show in the United States with racetrack sponsorships. I was a-m-a-z-e-d to see over 100 talented equine athletes that successfully transitioned into a Hunter or Jumper career. Whether they came from the track or were found skinny and unwanted at an auction or in someone’s backyard, it was their eyes and their kind souls that begged for someone to take a chance on them. The horses and riders shared a beautiful relationship. This was an eye opening experience that taught me how to better help the Thoroughbreds. The proceeds from the show’s silent auction benefited ATFL. We thank the Daily Racing Form for promoting the shows.

The winner of the After the Finish Line Hunter Stakes at the Thoroughbred Celebration Horse Shows was Angee Quattro Kerns aboard Harvest Moon March.  Angee also rode Have a Heart to a second place finish in this class. I had the honor of being included in their Winners’ Circle picture.

In April 2012, After the Finish Line will award grants to 501 (c) 3 rescue organizations.  If your organization’s mission is to save, care for and rehabilitate Thoroughbred ex-racehorses for a second career, please contact dawn@afterthefinishline.org to request a grant application. Include your website address. Applications must be received no later than February 13, 2012 to be considered.

In addition to our surprise Holiday donations to the rescue organizations, ATFL also awarded December emergency funds to 2 organizations. Tranquility Farms requested funding for U. C. Merced Two who was recently vanned off the track in California after reinjuring a bowed tendon. Merced had 23 starts earning $73k. ATFL provided funding for his winter layup so the bow can set and he can be retrained as a riding horse. Merced will be reunited with his dam, Leah’s Silverado, who was rescued by Tranquility.

Neigh Savers Foundation assisted a breeder who could no longer afford to feed all their horses. Neigh Savers took three horses, Lady Bradbury, Freedom’s Spirit and Rosarita Beach into their program. These mares raced in Northern CA and earned upwards of $42k. They range in age from 5 – 16 years old and can transition into jumping and riding horses. ATFL will assist with feed and board while they are being trained for adoption.

We look forward to continuing our relationships with our donors, businesses and charity partners in 2012 as well as working with new supporters. After the Finish Line will add several new and exciting fundraisers to our schedule next year. We look forward to your participation. Please consider making a Holiday donation for the horses.

Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!

Sincerely,
