ATFL News

January 2012

Dear After the Finish Line Supporters,

After the Finish Line currently has 13 fundraisers and awareness events planned for 2012. Many of these have become annual events and additional fundraisers are being planned. Last year over 1,000 people attended one or more of our fundraisers. We look forward to surpassing this number this year.

To date, the following fundraisers are confirmed: Stand Up For Horses at the IMPROV Comedy Club in Hollywood, CA, the Thoroughbred Celebration Horse Shows in Lexington, VA, the Del Sol Classic Thoroughbred series in Del Mar, CA, the Fiesta of the Spanish Horse, the Memorial Day Classic Horse Show & Hunter Derby at the LA Equestrian Center and Race for the Rescues in Pasadena. Our summer fundraisers include A Tribute to the Majesty of the Thoroughbreds, A Fiesta for the Horses and Pacificfest all in Del Mar, CA.

After the Finish Line posts our fundraisers and awareness events on our Facebook page and the fundraiser page of our website. ATFL is a national organization with reach across the United States. If you live in another state you can still participate by making a monetary donation, donating a silent or live auction item and making your friends aware of the positive work we do to help the off the track Thoroughbreds. We also appreciate sponsors of any level and volunteers.

Our silent and live auctions raise a significant amount of money to help the horses. About half of our fundraisers have auctions. This year ATFL will need over 200 auction items for our guests to bid on. It’s never too early to contact us about donations of in-kind items and services.

Please consider After the Finish Line as a charity partner if you, or an organization you volunteer with, are hosting an event anywhere in the United States. To discuss how you can participate in our fundraisers, please contact dawn@afterthefinishline.org.

After the Finish Line received a $10,000 donation from The Georgia B. Ridder Foundation. We are extremely grateful for this generous gift and proud to be recognized for the work we do to help the Thoroughbred ex-racehorses. Their letter reads, “In appreciation of the joy and excitement that Thoroughbreds create for horse lovers and racing fans, the Foundation would like to support the mission of After the Finish Line.”

The Ridder’s had many impressive horses in their barn. They raced Flying Paster, winner of the Santa Anita and Hollywood Derby’s and named California Horse of the year. Cascapedia was an Eclipse Award winner. After her husband’s passing, Mrs. Ridder raced Cat’s Cradle, California horse of the Year in 1995 and Alphabet Soup who won the 1996 Breeders’ Cup Classic.

After the Finish Line will award grants to 501 (c) 3 organizations in May 2012. If your mission is to save, care for and rehabilitate Thoroughbred ex-racehorses for a second career, please contact dawn@afterthefinishline.org to request a grant application. Please include your website address. Applications must be received no later than March 13, 2012 to be considered.

ATFL awarded January emergency funds to help Jerry’s Call, a fourteen year old gelding out of Cee’s Tizzy. He raced 7 times at Hollywood Park and Santa Anita earning $17k. Jerry’s Call was taken from his owner due to neglect and abandonment. ATFL will award funds for four months of rehabilitation that includes expenses for farrier and chiropractic, hay and feed and vaccines.

After the Finish Line was created for Thoroughbreds that have no means of support when their racing or breeding careers are over. Please consider making a donation to help the ex-racehorses.

Sincerely,
