March 2012

Dear After the Finish Line Supporters,

After the Finish Line hosts a variety of fundraisers and awareness events that appeal to a broad group of people. In other words, there’s something for everyone. Our fundraisers have been so successful that they have turned into annual events. We want you to join in the fun to raise money for this worthy cause, helping our Thoroughbred friends. They gave us a thrill of a lifetime on the racetrack. Let’s make sure we honor them by ensuring their welfare off the racetrack.

Successful auctions are filled with unique and one of a kind items and experiences. Seven of our seventeen fundraisers and awareness events have silent and live auctions. ATFL helps ex-racehorses throughout the United States. We also accept auction donations from throughout the United States. This year we need your help to obtain over 200 auction items. It’s never too early to contact us about donations. We accept donations of racing and equestrian items, restaurant gift cards, jewelry, travel and lodging, wine, artwork, photography, sports and movie tickets and memorabilia. Spa and salon packages, rounds of golf and retail store gift cards are also welcome.  Please review our fundraiser forms, Donor Letter and Donor Agreement. Contact if you have any questions.

The funds raised at our events enable After the Finish Line to award year-round funding, both monthly emergency funds and yearly grants, to qualified Thoroughbred rescue organizations across the United States. The funding can be used to save horses at auctions, pay for surgery or medical expenses, pay for farrier, dental or vet expenses, provide hay and feed, pay boarding expenses or transport a Thoroughbred to safety. Once rehabilitated and re-trained, these talented ex-racehorses can excel in a second career.

After the Finish Line will award grants to 501 (c) 3 organizations in May 2012. If your mission is to save, rehabilitate and re-train Thoroughbred ex-racehorses for a second career, please contact to request a grant application. Please include your website address. Applications must be received no later than March 13, 2012 to be considered.

This month ATFL awarded Emergency Funds to Equine Encore in Arizona who cares for 68 ex-racehorses. Their horses raced in New Mexico, Arizona and California. Most of the horses have earnings in excess of $100,000 and are permanent retirees due to injuries on the track. They will receive funds to help pay for all the horses to have their teeth floated.

Last month I spoke at the California Thoroughbred Farm Manager’s Association monthly meeting. The topic was After the Finish Line’s role in helping retired Thoroughbred racehorses. CTFMA President, Bob Curtis, presented a check to ATFL and thanked us for our contribution in Thoroughbred racehorse rescue. Also in February, our friend Susan Sisco hosted a charity riding clinic in Pennsylvania that raised much needed funds for the horses. Please consider ATFL as a charity partner if you, or an organization you volunteer with, are hosting an event anywhere in the United States.

March is a busy month with horse shows that promote Off the Track Thoroughbreds in second careers as Hunters, Jumpers and Pleasure Mounts. After the Finish Line has partnered with the Thoroughbred Celebration Horse Shows at the Virginia Horse Center and the Del Sol Classic Thoroughbred Series at Del Mar Showpark. Both consist of a series of three shows held throughout the year. Set your goals with your OTTB and let your horse know you have as much confidence in him as he has trust in you. We look forward to seeing you in After the Finish Line’s Winner’s Circle.

After the Finish Line would like to thank the Daily Racing Form for promoting our partnership with the Thoroughbred Celebration Horse Shows. Look for our full page ads on Saturday, March 3rd, Saturday, March 10th and Sunday, March 11th.

It doesn’t get better than this. Wearing an After the Finish Line cap is a great way to show your support for the ex-racers. These custom caps come in two colors, stone and black. Please contact to place an order.

After the Finish Line was created for Thoroughbreds that have no means of support when their racing or breeding careers are over. Please consider making a donation to help the ex-racehorses.
