April 2012

Dear After the Finish Line Supporters,

After the Finish Line kicked off our fundraiser season sponsoring horse shows from Virginia to California for off the track Thoroughbreds. The $1,500 After the Finish Line Hunter Stake at the Thoroughbred Celebration Horse Shows was won by Ash Hill, whose Jockey Club registered name is My Regal Smile. We thank the Thoroughbred Celebration Horse Shows for donating the proceeds of their silent auction to ATFL. The After the Finish Line Thoroughbred Championship at the Del Sol Classic was won by Chocolate Diamond in the Hunter division and Caliber in the Jumper division. We congratulate all the OTTB’s and their riders for participating in these shows. The OTTB’s are making a comeback in the competitive horse show arena. We encourage you to bring your OTTB to these shows.

Our next fundraiser is on April 29th at the IMPROV Comedy Club in Los Angeles. Actor/Comedian Paul Rodriguez will Headline After the Finish Line's comedy night called "Stand Up For Horses". You know Paul from his starring roles and featured appearances in over 45 films and countless television series and comedy specials. The silent auction is from 5:45 pm – 7:15 pm and show time is from 7:30 pm – 9:00 pm. If you are interested in sponsoring, donating auction items or volunteering, contact Dawn Mellen at dawn@afterthefinishline.org.

Our largest fundraiser of the year, “A Tribute to the Majesty of Thoroughbreds”, is held in Del Mar, CA during the Del Mar race meet. Our fundraiser documents include the Invitation, Save the Date, Donor Letter and Donor Agreement. We are honored to have as our speakers Hall of Fame jockey Laffit Pincay, Jr. and Laffit Pincay, III of NBC Sports and HRTV. Our Master of Ceremonies is Dan Cohen, Morning News Anchor at KFMB-Channel 8.

ATFL awarded April Emergency Funds to three rescue organizations. The Exceller Fund in Kentucky requested funds to transport, board and re-train Spectacular Won. Re-training will increase his potential for adoption as a show horse. After racing a total of 30 times in both New York and Florida “Spec” was sent to an auction and was fortunately saved.

Omega Horse Rescue in Pennsylvania requested funding for New York bred Mary’s Saint, who was also rescued from an auction. Mary’s Saint raced 15 times and earned $34k. ATFL fund her re-training to help her transition into a second career. Also, Run for Home Haven in California will receive funding for hay and grain for their 8 ex-racers as the price of hay continues to rise.

Wear your support for After the Finish Line by purchasing our caps. These custom caps are available in stone or black. Order your cap by contacting  dawn@afterthefinishline.org.

Sincerely,
