ATFL News

August 2012

Dear Thoroughbred Friends,

“The greatest victory for a Thoroughbred is not winning a race,
but winning the race to live long past their days on the racetrack.”
                                                                                                                        ~Dawn Mellen

Thank you to our sponsors, guests, donors, board members and volunteers who attended and supported After the Finish Line’s 5th Annual Charity Fundraiser, “A Tribute to the Majesty of Thoroughbreds.” We are grateful for the support from the racing industry, our local community and those throughout the United States who donated. This was our biggest and once again, our most successful fundraiser of the year to benefit the ex-racehorses. With the funds raised, ATFL will continue our mission of saving, rehabilitating and re-training off the track Thoroughbreds for a second career.

The evening began with our auctioneer, Steve Hamman, keeping our guests focused on bidding on over 100 silent auction items and creating excitement for and during the live auction. Our MC, Dan Cohen, morning news anchor, KFMB Channel-8, entertained the crowd while instilling the purpose of the evening during the pledge session. Our guest speakers, Laffit Pincay, Jr., Hall of Fame Jockey and Laffit Pincay, III, NBC Sports & HRTV, delighted our guests with racing and personal stories only they could tell. Thank you to KFMB-Channel 8 for sending a film crew to broadcast our event and the print media for putting ATFL on the front page of their papers.

This month ATFL awarded Emergency Funds to 3 rescue organizations. GEVA in Northern California requested funding for Shimmering, a mare who earned $177,000 racing in California. Her owner could no longer afford to care for the now broodmare and wanted to ensure a good home. ATFL will help sponsor Shimmering while a new home can be found.

Tijuana River Valley rescued 4 Thoroughbreds. Unfortunately, one gelding had to be euthanized. Coquelin, Mt. Housemore and Cabo Real raced in California, range in age from 15 – 22 and earned up to $22,000 racing. ATFL will award funding for veterinary care, lameness evaluations, feed and farrier, dental and chiropractic care.

Senorita Franca, a tattooed, yet unraced Thoroughbred, was rescued from a neglect situation by New Dawn Rescue. This 9 year old horse is 250 pounds underweight. ATFL will award funds for feed, vet exams, medication, vaccines, dental and farrier expenses.

After the Finish Line hosted an evening with Robert Vavra, the premier photographer of equines. Mr. Vavra has authored 37 books with more than 3,000,000 volumes in eight languages in print. His film work includes Lawrence of Arabia, Patton and The Horse Whisperer, where he was a creative advisor for Robert Redford. It's impossible to summarize his accomplishments. To be inspired, visit www.robertvavra.com.

After the Finish Line is the August charity of the month at En Fuego Cantina & Grill in Del Mar. ATFL recently took over the restaurant one evening for our "Fiesta for the Horses" party where En Fuego donated 10% of restaurant sales to us. Also, throughout this month, En Fuego will donate $1 for every "Finish Line Margarita" sold. Thank you to everyone who attended in support of Thoroughbred ex-racehorses.

ATFL is sponsoring the After the Finish Line Thoroughbred Series at Del Mar Horsepark on August 15 -16 to promote off the track Thoroughbreds in second careers as Hunters and Jumpers. Enter your OTTB and compete with other talented Thoroughbreds in the horse show arena for prize money.

On Sunday, October 7th, ATFL will participate in the Race for the Rescues. This road running race at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA attracted 2,800 entries last year in support of neglected and abandoned dogs, horses and cats in the greater Los Angeles area. We need you to join the After the Finish Line team or donate to our team to raise money to save the ex-racehorses. Please contact dawn@afterthefinishline.org for more information.

Summer is a busy time for After the Finish Line. Our fundraisers increase awareness for our cause and help us to raise funds for the ex-racehorses and broodmares. If you want to support ATFL and can’t attend our fundraisers, please donate or mail your check to the address below.

Sincerely,
