ATFL News

September 2012

Dear After the Finish Line Supporters,

So far this year After the Finish Line hosted 11 fundraisers and awareness events. The Del Mar racing season saw many successful ATFL events, including our annual Majesty of the Thoroughbreds charity dinner, our Fiesta for the Horses at En Fuego Cantina and Grill and the
ATFL Thoroughbred Series at the Del Sol Classic.

Attendance and excitement for our events continue to grow as we bring both the equestrian and non-equestrian communities together to raise awareness for the welfare of Thoroughbred ex-racehorses. Those of you who couldn’t attend our events showed your support by sending a donation. ATFL thanks everyone for their generosity. You helped ATFL give the ex-racehorses the second chance they deserve to transition into a new career.

The year is not over and ATFL has several more fundraisers planned. First, we’re “off to the races” with the Race for the Rescues, a road running event at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA on Sunday, October 7th.  Join ATFL for a 5K and 10K run, 1K Dog Walk and Kids Fun Run. Last year 2,800 runners participated in this amazing fundraiser. Help us raise money for the ex- racehorses by joining the After the Finish Line Team. You can either Join Our Team or Donate to our Team. Ask your family, friends or colleagues to sponsor you.

ATFL ends our OTTB horse show season with the After the Finish Line Thoroughbred Series at the Del Sol Classic in Del Mar, CA on September 29-30 and the Thoroughbred Celebration Horse Show in Lexington, VA on November 2-4. The TCHS and ATFL celebrate our 4th year of partnership to benefit OTTB’s competing in second careers as Hunters and Jumpers. The TCHS donates the proceeds from their silent auctions to After the Finish Line. ATFL awards the funds to rescue organizations to help other Thoroughbreds transition into a second career.

After the Finish Line awarded emergency funds to three organizations in September. After the Homestretch has a 4 year old gelding named Stubborn Streak who started racing last November at Hollywood Park. His racing career ended less than 5 months later at Turf Paradise due to bone chips and spurs in his knees. ATFL will award funds for arthroscopic surgery.

Neigh Savers rescued 3 horses at different auctions. Fire Glow, is thought to have been used in illegal street racing. Bucks a Smoken and Rockin Naga were rescued from an estate auction. Rockin Naga is 5 months pregnant and will remain with the rescue for another year while Bucks A Smokin needs corrective shoes due to a rotating coffin bone. ATFL will provide funds for training, medical care and boarding.

Equestrian, Inc. of Florida requested funding for Continuity Counts, a 1992 mare who raced twice in California before becoming a broodmare. She developed a neck abscess and partial vision loss. ATFL helped with surgery, medication, examination and vaccination expenses.

Purchase Born to Greatness, Zenyatta & Foal by Fred Stone on the ATFL Store link of our website. Mr. Stone is the best known artist of horses in the world today. He will donate a generous portion of the proceeds from the sale of his art on our website, including I’ll Have Another, to After the Finish Line. Also available are ATFL’s custom caps in stone or black. We will be adding additional products soon.

Thank you again for attending and supporting our fundraisers throughout the year. Your donations are helping us make a difference in the lives of the ex-racehorses.

Sincerely,
