ATFL News

November 2012

Dear Friends of After the Finish Line,

After the Finish Line is grateful for the year round support we receive from our donors. You attended our fundraisers, made monetary donations, donated auction items and introduced us to others concerned about the welfare of ex-racehorses and broodmares. The rescue organizations across the United States contact us for funding to save, rehabilitate and re- train their horses to help them get adopted and start a new life off the racetrack. Requests for assistance from ATFL has grown significantly. Please consider making a year-end, tax-deductible donation to enable us to continue to help the Thoroughbreds.

Join After the Finish Line for our Holiday Open House and Art Sale at the Michael Seewald Gallery. This event takes place at the Del Mar Plaza on Saturday, December 1st in Del Mar, CA from 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm. Our event coincides with Del Mar’s Holiday Wonderland and Tree Lighting. Photographer Michael Seewald will debut his world premier release of “Croatia”. Fred Stone, the best-known painter of horses in the world today will exhibit his artwork, including, “Born to Greatness”, a portrait of Zenyatta and Foal and his book, “Reflections on a Golden Age”.  Nina Kaiser, internationally acclaimed sculptor of Thoroughbred horses will exhibit her bronze sculptures including Zenyatta. Each artist will donate a portion of their sales to After the Finish Line.

After the Finish Line is proud to be recognized by Cavalia, a magical encounter between Human and Horse. This is an innovative multi-media and multi-disciplinary production created by Normand Latourelle, one of the co-founders of famed Cirque du Soleil. This is Cavalia’s final stop on its North American tour before heading overseas to Australia. ATFL has been invited to attend the opening night performance in San Diego.

ATFL thanks Cavalia for their generous donation to our Holiday Open House and Art Sale on December 1st. Cavalia has donated a gift basket valued at $500 that contains two (2) Rendez-Vous VIP center-row seats, VIP passes for complimentary food and beverages, an exclusive stables tour and souvenirs from their boutique. Join us for a chance to win!

The Race for the Rescues was a great success. After the Finish Line gave seven rescue organizations the opportunity to join this road running race fundraiser in Pasadena, CA to raise money for their horses. The After the Finish Line Team included Southern CA Thoroughbred Rescue, The Golden Carrot, Canter Ohio & Michigan, Bright Futures Farm, GEVA and The Exceller Fund. Each organization received a check from ATFL. We'll meet you at the starting line next year!

Not only did the Breeders’ Cup showcase the best horses in the world, it also hosted a Thoroughbred Aftercare area. This area showcased many of the California rescue organizations that help Thoroughbreds once their racing and breeding careers are over. Thanks to the Breeders’ Cup and CARMA, our on track presence allowed us to bring awareness to the racing community.

After the Finish Line awarded Emergency Funds to three rescue organizations in November. Triple Me Mac Equine Sanctuary requested funds for Malt N Jam, a 5 year old Thoroughbred who race at Sam Houston Race Track earning no more than $4,500. Malt N Jam had a broken shoulder and was underweight. ATFL will provide funds during his rehab for feed, farrier, supplements and dental expenses.

Northstar Horse Rescue in Maine purchased 3 fillies advertised on the internet. The fillies were foaled in Pennsylvania to take advantage of a breeder’s incentive program. When the breeding operation could no longer afford to feed their horses, many were seized by the ASPCA. These 3 fillies were later found on the internet for sale. ATFL will provide funding for their winter feed.

Saving Horses helped rescue two pony horses at the racetrack. Don’t Forget Muq, who raced in California, and Stray Cat Struter, who raced in Texas, were ridden during the morning workouts. The riders could not afford to feed their horses or provide the necessary vet care. ATFL will provide funding for board, feed and farrier expenses.

As the Holidays approach, consider supporting After the Finish Line by purchasing Born to Greatness, Zenyatta & Foal by Fred Stone through the ATFL Store link on our website. Mr. Stone will donate a generous portion of the proceeds from the sale of his art on our website, including I’ll HaveAnother and his book, Reflections on a Golden Age. ATFL is the charity partner for OTTB Designs. Also available are ATFL’s custom caps in stone or black.

Sincerely,
