December 2012

Dear Friends of After the Finish Line,

After the Finish Line wants to thank our family of donors for their generous support in 2012. In 2013, ATFL will continue to grow our donor base of individuals, businesses and foundations so that we can help more Thoroughbred ex-racehorses and broodmares. We are already planning our 2013 fundraisers and look forward to your participation. Please consider making a year-end tax deductible Holiday donation for the horses.

Happy Holidays from After the Finish Line! This month we sent surprise Holiday donations to 9 rescue organizations: Angel’s Haven, Beyond the Roses, CANTER Kentucky and Ohio, Harmony and Hope, Little Brook Farm, Remember Me Rescue, Tierra Madre and Florida TRAC. We appreciate their commitment to the Thoroughbred ex-racehorses in their care. This demanding work does not go unnoticed and ATFL applauds their dedication to our equine friends.

SOLD OUT! Our December fundraiser and awareness event was the After the Finish Line Rosette hosted by OTTB Designs. Let your OTTB know what he means to you. Maybe you shared a personal triumph or didn’t have the opportunity to compete for a blue ribbon. You can acknowledge the respect you share for each other and help save more OTTB’s at the same time. After the Finish Line will donate the proceeds from the sale of this limited edition rosette to Old Friends, Friends of Ferdinand, The Exceller Fund and Our Mims.

After the Finish Line awarded Emergency Funds to three rescue organizations in December. CANTER Michigan requested funds for five Thoroughbreds, Tri Power, Meadow Note, Sigmondo, Boyd’s Kingdom and Sahm’s L’il Soldier, that retired from racing due to bone chips and leg fractures. All together these horses had 146 starts and earned over $317,000. They raced at Thistledown, Tampa Bay, Mt. Pleasant, Delaware, Laurel Park, Saratoga, Belmont or Mountaineer. ATFL provided funds for their surgery and rehabilitation to help them heal and transition into a second career.

Beyond the Roses assisted in the rescue of 7 horses from Sugarcreek auction. Exchange Girl, Ibedarn, Grunwald, Leon Royale, and Shiloh Creek previously raced at Calder, Penn National, Suffolk Downs, Pimlico, Santa Anita, Del Mar, Monmouth Park or Canterbury Park. They range in age from 3-6 years old and together earned nearly $500,000. ATFL provided funds for all the Thoroughbreds to have x-rays so they can be diagnosed correctly to treat their injuries.

L.E.A.N. Horses was contacted by County officials regarding a Thoroughbred named Agassi that foundered and was emaciated. Agassi sold for $230,000 as a yearling. He only raced three times at Santa Anita and Hollywood Park before being retired due to an injury. Agassi has spent a month in the equine hospital healing his feet and gaining weight. ATFL will provide funds to help pay the hospital bill.

During the Holiday season, consider supporting After the Finish Line by purchasing Born to Greatness, Zenyatta & Foal or Reflections on a Golden Age by artist Fred Stone through the ATFL Store link on our website. ATFL is the charity partner for OTTB Designs. Each company will make a donation to us from the sales of their products.
Also available are ATFL’s baseball caps. Our quality custom caps make a statement in either in black or stone.

After the Finish Line will be awarding grants to 501 (c) 3 rescue organizations in 2013. If your organization’s mission is to save, care for and rehabilitate Thoroughbred ex-racehorses for a second career, please contact to request a grant application. Include your website address. Applications must be received no later than March 1, 2013 to be considered.

Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!
