January 2013

Dear Friends of After the Finish Line,

With your support, After the Finish Line awarded almost $100,000 to Thoroughbred rescue organizations in 2012. We happily signed 65 checks for rescue organizations in 17 states helping over 300 horses. ATFL awards yearly grants, monthly emergency funds and even year-end Holiday funding to rescue organizations across the United States that save, rehabilitate and re-train Thoroughbreds for a second career.

::: Grants and Emergency Funds :::

After the Finish Line will award grants to 501 (c) 3 rescue organizations in May. If your organization’s mission is to save, rehabilitate and re-train Thoroughbred ex-racehorses or broodmares for a second career, please contact to request a grant application. Please include your website address. Completed applications must be received no later than March 29, 2013 to be considered.

After the Finish Line is a year round funding source for Thoroughbred rescue organizations. In addition to our yearly grants, we also provide monthly emergency funds because we know every day a horse needs our help. The funding can be used
to save horses at auctions, for surgery or medical expenses, for farrier, dental or vet expenses, provide hay and feed, pay boarding expenses or transport a Thoroughbred to safety.

This month two organizations new to After the Finish Line requested January emergency funds. Thoroughbred Athletes, Inc. in Oklahoma cares for 8 Off Track Thoroughbreds that range in age from 3-8 years. In the past, the rescue was able to grow their own hay. The draught caused them to look for other sources of hay.  ATFL provided funds to help them purchase hay. With training, Winawar, Red Road Okie First Turnado, Tanglewood Drive and their barn mates will have a bright future and hopefully will one day be able to compete in the rescues’ Sports of Kings Challenge Thoroughbred show when they are adopted.

Tearson’s Equine Athletes Rescue and Sanctuary (TEAR’S) in California has 9 Thoroughbreds in their care. Their horses raced on the California tracks and at Longacres, Fair Grounds, Keeneland and Arlington Park. Utterly Awesome, Golden Royal, Ms Rozinna, Prima Figlia, Alotta Bling, Little Lou, Phone Rumor and Diane’s Purchase are in-training, available for adoption or retired. ATFL will provide funds for their hay expense.

::: Thoroughbred Horse Shows :::

Thoroughbred horse shows are gaining popularity throughout the United States. 2013 marks our fourth year of partnering with the Thoroughbred Celebration Horse Shows. ATFL and friends are excited to sponsor the $1,500 After the Finish Line Hunter Stake. The show helps ATFL raise money by donating the proceeds of their silent auction to us. We will be the recipient of a portion of the entry fees from The Jockey Club T.I.P English Pleasure classes at all three shows this year. And, the Recycled Ribbons for Recycled Racehorses program will generate funds for each ribbon returned to the show office. ATFL is looking forward to meeting the riders and their OTTB’s at the first show of the season on March 15-17.

The Thoroughbred Classic Horse Show Series is the first all Thoroughbred series on the West coast. It is through the generosity of the Siegel-CARMA Endowment that this series of three horses shows dedicated to Off Track Thoroughbreds will be launched. The first show will be held April 20-21at the Rancho Mission Viejo Riding Park in San Juan Capistrano, CA. Additional shows are planned for July and October. Please email,, if you have questions.

::: Volunteers and ATFL Store :::

After the Finish Line is planning our fundraiser and awareness events for 2013. We will host and partner with organizations in Del Mar and greater Los Angeles and Lexington, VA. Please contact us if you want to host or partner with ATFL to raise money for the ex-racehorses.

After the Finish Line is looking for volunteers with all skill levels to help grow our organization.  If you have experience with event planning, fundraisers, grant writing, marketing, sources for auction items or computer skills, then join us for a rewarding experience in helping the horses. You can get involved in a project or just volunteer at an event. And, you don’t have to live locally in Southern California to participate. Please contact us at
