March 2013

Dear Friends of After the Finish Line,

::: Fundraisers :::

After the Finish Line invites you to participate in our 2013 fundraisers.  Last year ATFL awarded a total of 65 grants, emergency funds and special event funding to support rescue organizations in 17 states and helping over 300 ex-racehorses. We can raise even more money and save even more horses this year with your continued support. You can attend our fundraisers as a guest or volunteer, donate auction items or be a sponsor. We host or are the charity partner at several different types of fundraisers.

::: Grants and Emergency Funds :::

After the Finish Line will award grants to 501 (c) 3 rescue organizations in May. If your organization’s mission is to save, rehabilitate and re-train Thoroughbred ex-racehorses or broodmares for a second career, please contact dawn@afterthefinishline.org to request an application. Please include your website address. Completed applications must be received no later than March 29, 2013 to be considered.

Our March emergency funds were awarded to Project Spirit Horse Rescue for Alyrob, who finished 8th in the 1996 Kentucky Derby. Alyrob’s owner asked to board him at the rescue over three years ago. He arrived thin, with bad feet and teeth. He was stressed and full of fight. Alyrob’s owner was inconsistent in paying his boarding expenses and the rescue owners could no longer afford to pay for his care. Alyrob was then deemed abandoned and now owned by the rescue. ATFL awarded funding to sponsor his board, hay, feed, farrier and dental.

Up to 20 horses race in the Kentucky Derby every year. As the years go by only a few are remembered or ever heard of again. Alyrob has the bloodlines of the great Thoroughbred champions, Alysheba and Alydar. Seventeen years after racing in the Kentucky Derby and Santa Anita Derby, Alyrob is happy living in his pasture with his friends.

::: Volunteers :::

After the Finish Line is looking for volunteers with all skill levels to help grow our organization. You can get involved in a project or just volunteer at a fundraiser. You don’t have to live locally in Southern California. If you have experience with event planning, fundraisers, grant writing, marketing, sources for auction items or computer skills, then join us for a rewarding experience in helping the Thoroughbreds. Please contact dawn@afterthefinishline.org

::: Merchandise :::

Show your support for ATFL by making a donation or purchasing a cap. Our quality, custom caps come in two colors, black or stone. Visit our ATFL Store link to order. Also, ATFL is the designated charity partner for OTTB Designs.

::: Donations :::

After the Finish Line was created for Thoroughbreds that have no means of support after their racing and breeding careers are over. We receive donations from supporters throughout the United States.

Sincerely,
