Dear Thoroughbred Friends,
“The greatest victory for a Thoroughbred is not winning a race,
but winning the race to live long past their days on the racetrack.”
Thank you to our sponsors, guests, auction donors, board members and volunteers who attended and supported After the Finish Line’s 6th Annual Charity Fundraiser, “A Tribute to the Majesty of Thoroughbreds.” We are grateful for the support from the racing industry, our local community and those throughout the United States who donated. This was our biggest and once again, our most successful fundraiser of the year to benefit the ex-racehorses. With the funds raised, ATFL will continue our mission of saving, rehabilitating and re-training off the track Thoroughbreds for a second career or retirement.
The evening began with our guests bidding on over 100 silent auction items during the reception while the media snapped pictures for their newspapers. In the ballroom our Master of Ceremonies, Dan Cohen of KFMB Channel-8, entertained the crowd while instilling the purpose of the evening. Presentations by Dr. Robert Harman and jockey Kayla Stra inspired the audience. The Live auction and Pledge session had guests raising their paddles to raise money for the ex-racehorses. Our guest speaker, Robert Vavra, the world's premier photographer of horses, shared how he captured the excitement and inner nature of the horses he photographed for his 37 books.
When one fundraiser is over, another one begins! After the Finish Line is the August charity of the month at En Fuego Cantina and Grill. All month long $1 will be donated to ATFL for every Finish Line Margarita sold. On Wednesday, August 21st, ATFL takes over the restaurant for “A Fiesta for the Horses” party. Our celebrity bartender is jockey Kayla Stra. Join us from 6 pm – closing for dinner, appetizers and “Finish Line” Margaritas. En Fuego will donate 10% of all restaurant sales to ATFL. Gather your friends and help us raise money for the ex-racehorses. Our media partner is LOCALE Magazine.
Also, join After the Finish Line at the Del Mar Race Track for the $1 million TVG Pacific Classic on Sunday, August 25th. ATFL has a charity table at the entrance to the track’s Clubhouse/Turf Club. We’ll be selling our ATFL caps, racing memorabilia and art to support the ex-racehorses.
This month After the Finish Line awarded Emergency Funds to 3 rescue organizations. Funds raised at the Thoroughbred Celebration Horse Show and Langer Equestrian’s Hunter Derby enabled us to help these rescue organizations. We are grateful that each organization has supported ATFL for many years.
Auction Horse Rescue saved Salah Salah from a California feed lot. He is a 6 year old gelding who earned $13k racing at Hollywood Park, Del Mar and Fairplex Park. He appears to be sound for all riding disciplines. ATFL paid to purchase him, for dental, farrier, vaccines and boarding.
CANTER Michigan requested funds for Tiban, a Stakes winning horse who raced 28 times finishing in the top 3 in 19 of his last 21 races. Calvin Borel, Kentucky Derby winning jockey, was Tiban’s primary jockey. At 6 years old he earned $200k and developed bone chips in his front legs. ATFL will help fund his surgery to remove the bone chips so Tiban can transition into a second career.
Neigh Savers rescued a Thoroughbred with many ailments. He was underweight, has a blistered bow tendon and was covered with fungus. The gelding's basic needs were being ignored. ATFL will provide funds for his board, farrier, dental and vaccinations.
Summer is a busy time for After the Finish Line. Our fundraisers garner awareness for our cause and help us to raise funds for the ex-racehorses and retired broodmares. If you want to support ATFL yet can’t attend our fundraisers, please donate or mail your check to the address below. You can also purchase an ATFL cap in black, stone, green or pink.
