OCTOBER 2013

Dear of Friends of After the Finish Line,

This month After the Finish Line’s celebrates its 6th year of pursuing our mission of providing year-round financial support to rescue and retirement organizations that save, rehabilitate and re-train off track Thoroughbreds for a second career or retirement. ATFL awards both yearly grants and monthly emergency funds to help Thoroughbreds in need across the United States. Our fundraisers, sponsors, grants and donors all help to generate the funding needed. We thank and appreciate our supporters and dedicated board members and volunteers.

::: 2014 Fundraisers :::

Even though the year is winding down, After the Finish Line is still in high gear planning our 2014 fundraisers. We welcome your input. Please contact dawn@afterthefinishline.org if you want to host an event for ATFL or partner with ATFL to raise money for the ex-racehorses.

::: October Fundraisers :::

This year marks After the Finish Line’s 4th year in partnership with the Thoroughbred Celebration Horse Shows at the Virginia Horse Center. The third horse show of 2013 is October 25-27th. ATFL and Friends sponsors the $1,500 After the Finish Line Hunter Stake. This show series promotes Off Track Thoroughbreds in second careers as Hunters, Jumpers and Pleasure Mounts. NEW this year is the addition of Dressage, combined training, western pleasure and side saddle. Proceeds from the silent auction benefit After the Finish Line. We look forward to seeing the ex-racehorses in the Daily Racing Form Winner’s Circle.

::: Emergency Funds :::

After the Finish Line awards monthly emergency funds to 501 (c) 3 rescue and retirement organizations that save, rehabilitate, re-train and adopt Thoroughbred ex-racehorses and broodmares for a second career or retirement. The funding can be used to save horses at auctions, for surgery or medical expenses, for farrier, dental or vet expenses, for hay and feed, for boarding or to transport a Thoroughbred to safety. Please contact dawn@afterthefinishline.org to request an emergency fund application.

This month ATFL awarded October emergency funds to three rescue organizations. Tranquility Farm requested funding to purchase hay for their 65 retired Thoroughbreds. They range in age from 4 to 24 years old and their earnings range from $3k to nearly $1 million from claiming races to graded stakes races. These horses earned their retirement.

Equine Encore Foundation, located in the desert of Arizona, cares for 63 ex-racehorses. All of these horses are permanent residents of the rescue organization because of their age and/or the injuries they suffered while racing. The pump on their well that supplies water for the herd unexpectedly broke. Over the years the rescue has taken in many more horses that put a strain on their water system. The rescue had to temporarily ration water for the horses with the temperature hovering near 100 degrees. ATFL provided funds to help fix their water pump.

A Saturday night phone call from Neigh Savers Foundation led to the rescue of My Field of Dreams. Auction Horse Rescue found this horse at the Turlock Auction. He had worked on the racetrack at Golden Gate Fields only 2 weeks earlier. In 2 starts, this 4 year old gelding earned a few thousand dollars. My Field of Dreams has a swollen knee and the rescue does not yet know the extent of the injury. ATFL provided funds to purchase him from the auction and provide board during his rehabilitation.

::: Donations :::

Do you know what happens to Thoroughbreds that are no longer able to race or breed?  Help After the Finish Line raise money to save them from possible slaughter and neglect. ATFL was created to help horses that are not wanted after their racing and breeding careers are over. Your donation will help save, rehabilitate and re-train Thoroughbred ex-racehorses and broodmares for a second career or retirement. We thank our supporters throughout the United States for their donations. Also, please contact ATFL at dawn@afterthefinishline.org if you would like to discuss a year-end tax donation.

Sincerely,

dawn mellen
