NOVEBER 2013

Dear of Friends of After the Finish Line,

“The greatest victory for a Thoroughbred is not winning a race,
but winning the race to live long past their days on the racetrack.”
                                                                                                             ~Dawn Mellen

As we enter the Holiday season, After the Finish Line wants to Thank you and let you know how grateful we are for the year round support we receive from our donors. You attended our fundraisers, made monetary donations, donated auction items and shared our cause with others. Your generosity has helped us keep pace with the ever growing number of funding requests we receive from rescue organizations across the United States. Please consider making a year-end tax-deductible donation so we can help more Thoroughbreds in need in 2014.

::: October Fundraiser :::

The Thoroughbred Celebration Horse Shows in Virginia had a tremendous turnout at their final show of the year on October 25-27. Two hundred and three talented Off Track Thoroughbreds competed in Hunter, Jumper, Dressage, Western Pleasure and Side Saddle classes. The winner of the $1,500 After the Finish Line Hunter Stakes was Fappy (Jockey Club name Fappy Nekia). After the Finish Line received $3,750 from the silent auction, ribbon recycle program and a portion of the proceeds from The Jockey Club T.I.P. Pleasure classes.

::: Emergency Funds :::

After the Finish Line awards monthly emergency funds to 501 (c) 3 rescue and retirement organizations that save, rehabilitate, re-train and adopt Thoroughbred ex-racehorses, and broodmares for a second career or retirement. The funding can be used for: surgery or medical expenses, farrier, dental or vet expenses, for hay and feed, for boarding or transporting a Thoroughbred to safety and to save horses at auctions. Please contact dawn@afterthefinishline.org to request an emergency fund application.

November emergency funds were awarded to three rescue organizations in Colorado, New Jersey and California. New Life Thoroughbred Rescue has 8 Thoroughbreds that that raced in Illinois, Maryland, Florida, Oklahoma, California, Arizona and Indiana with earnings ranging from $0 to over $250,000. Today, Memo Queen, Dry Branch Dame, Shesababe, Gaspode, Mostacolli Mort, Rajah, Titanium Ruler and Memo Mon participate in their youth program. These Thoroughbreds spend their days with children from all walks of life sharing unconditional love and trust that facilitates healing for both equine and child. Working together the children learn to groom and care for the ex-racehorses as well as learning groundwork and how to ride. ATFL will provide funds for hay, grain and supplements for these horses.

ReRun, Inc. took in Lil Dez and Two of a Kind. Both horses were rescued from potentially life threatening situations and require an extended period of rest and rehabilitation before they can be adoptable. Lil Dez is an unraced 6 year old. ATFL will provide funding for board, farrier, veterinarian and vaccination expenses. Two of a Kind is a 4 year old who raced at Saratoga, Delaware Park and PARX, earning $24,000.He had previously sold for $150,000. He is lame and stall bound due to a tendon injury. ATFL will provide funds for vet care, vaccinations, board and farrier expenses.

United Pegasus Foundation cares for 58 Off Track Thoroughbreds that raced at Golden Gate, Hollywood Park, Pomona Fairplex, Del Mar and Santa Anita. Only 7 of these horses are in training while the rest are retired due to physical or emotional issues. With all those mouths to feed, ATFL will provide funds to purchase hay for their horses.
