DECEMBER 2013

Dear Friends of After the Finish Line,

Because of your donations, After the Finish Line was able to award over $110,000 to help Thoroughbred ex-racehorses and broodmares in 2013. We awarded funding to 62 rescue and retirement organizations in 17 states, helping over 300 horses. ATFL awarded grants, monthly emergency funds and compassion funds to save, rehabilitate and re-train Thoroughbreds for a second career or retirement.

After the Finish Line is a year round funding source for Thoroughbred rescue organizations. We provide monthly emergency funds because we know every day a horse needs our help. The funding can be used to save horses at auctions, for surgery or medical expenses, for farrier, dental or vet expenses, provide hay and feed, pay boarding expenses or transport a Thoroughbred to safety. Please contact dawn@afterthefinishline.org to request an application.

::: Monthly Emergency Funds :::

After the Finish Line awarded December emergency funds to two rescue organizations. High Hurdles Therapeutic Riding requested funds for Ziggy’s Island, a small Thoroughbred who raced eleven times. He didn’t win any races and only earned $2,490. Ziggy came to High Hurdles on trial and is performing beautifully in lessons with riders in the program. Many riders use a mechanical lift to sit on his back. Ziggy is prone to digestion problems and requires special feed. ATFL will provide funds for a year’s supply of his feed.

Tijuana River Valley rescued Finely Decorated, a mare that was previously rescued several years ago in the widely publicized animal cruelty case of Erinie Paragallo. This 21 year old mare raced 35 times on east coast tracks earning $33k. Finely Decorated was originally adopted and transported to California where she was found underweight, in need of medical attention and dejected. ATFL will provide funds for her expenses that include: veterinarian, dental, farrier, feed, vaccines and supplements.

::: Surprise Holiday Donations :::

After the Finish Line’s surprise holiday donations for the rescue organizations are becoming a tradition. This month we mailed a total of $12,000 to 17 rescue organizations located throughout the United States that include: Under the Angel’s Wing, Beauty’s Haven, Hope in the Valley, Bay State Equine, Doxy Horse Recovery, Horse Protection Society of North Carolina, Hope’s Legacy, Horse Play, New Dawn Rescue, Harmony and Hope, Golden Carrot, After the Homestretch, Tierra Madre, Project Spirit, Equine Racers, Equestrian, Inc. and Florida TRAC. Their demanding work does not go unnoticed and ATFL applauds their dedication to helping the ex-racehorses. Please visit our Facebook page to see pictures of these Thoroughbreds.

::: ATFL Caps :::

Support After the Finish Line this holiday season by purchasing a cap for yourself or a friend. Our quality, custom designed caps come in four colors: hunter green or pink and stone or black . Our website is stitched on the back of the cap. Visit the ATFL Store link on our website to order.

::: Year End Donations :::

Do you know what happens to Thoroughbreds that are no longer able to race or breed?  Help After the Finish Line raise money to save them from possible slaughter and neglect. ATFL was created to help horses that are not wanted after their racing and breeding careers are over. Your donation will help save, rehabilitate and re-train Thoroughbred ex-racehorses and broodmares for a second career or retirement.  Please consider making a year-end tax deductible donation for the horses.

Sincerely,

dawn mellen
