February 2014

Happy Valentine’s Day!

This has been an extraordinarily snowy and cold winter. The Off Track Thoroughbreds are making good use of their blankets this season and hopefully will find a way to show appreciation to their owners for braving the frigid temperatures to provide them the extra care they require. For those Thoroughbreds not so lucky to have found their “person”, please consider making a donation.

::: Emergency Funds :::

After the Finish Line awards monthly Emergency Funds to qualified 501 (c) 3 rescue and retirement organizations that save, rehabilitate, re-train and adopt Thoroughbred horses that were bred to race. Please review our Guidelines for funding and carefully follow the instructions to apply.

Trinity Horse Refuge has given a home to New Macho Man, an Off Track Thoroughbred rescued at a California auction. This 4 year old gelding was sent to the auction with an untreated slab fracture. He only had two starts and crossed the finish line first in one race earning $5,700. The rescue thought there may be other issues with New Macho Man and decided to do a full blood panel for his safety. Luckily his tests didn’t show any signs of illness. After the Finish Line paid for his blood tests.

Beyond The Roses Equine Rescue & Retirement helps to retire and provide a home for the older racing warriors. These 12 horses have started upwards of 90 times. During their racing careers, they earned hundreds of thousands dollars yet ended racing in low level claiming races. After the Finish Line provided funds to pay their hay bills for the next few months. We know Twisted Wit, Top Bunk,  Nyuk-Nyuk-Nyuk, Distorted Groom, Fuhrever Dancing, So Busted, Skippy Due, Tiger Lakes and friends will appreciate their next hay delivery donated by ATFL.

New Life Thoroughbred Rescue connects youth from all walks of life with their 8 Off Track Thoroughbreds to facilitate healing for both equine and child. Memo Mon, Dry Branch Dame, Mostacolli Mort, Shesababe and Rajah raced at tracks throughout the country earning between $1,500k and $250,000k. Some retired from racing with injuries, others were rescued from auctions and Memo Queen had also been a broodmare. Titanium Ruler and Gaspode were in training but never raced. ATFL will provide funding for their hay, grain and supplements.

After the Finish Line received a donation that we wish we would receive more often.  Racehorse owners made a donation to ATFL and asked that we forward the funds to Equine Encore Foundation to help support their ex-racehorse that resides there. This will help with the ongoing care and re-training needed to help get the horse adopted. We appreciate racehorse owners that provide support to help their ex-racehorses.

::: ATFL Caps :::

After the Finish Line’s custom caps are available in green, pink, stone and black at the After the Finish Line store. Our canvas caps are one size with an adjustable metal clasp. They feature our service mark, "A 501 (c) 3 funding non-profit for rescued Thoroughbred ex-racehorses" and our website, www.afterthefinishline.org, on the back. All proceeds benefit the rescue, rehabilitation and re-training of Off Track Thoroughbreds and cost only $20 + $5 shipping.

::: Donations :::

After the Finish Line was created for Thoroughbreds that have no means of support after their racing and breeding careers have ended. Please join our supporters from throughout the United Stated and donate to help the Thoroughbreds.

Sincerely,
