ATFL News

October 2014

Dear Friends of After the Finish Line,

This month After the Finish Line celebrates its 7th Anniversary!!  We have made great strides over the years. Our mission is simple; to provide year-round financial support to rescue and retirement organizations that save, rehabilitate and re-train Off Track Thoroughbreds for a second career or retirement, to create public awareness and ensure a quality of life for Thoroughbreds by saving them from slaughter and neglect.

Yet much more funding must be raised from the racing industry and those that support racing or place wagers on the horses. No OTTB should ever step foot in an auction or be allowed to live with untreated injuries or in deplorable conditions. We need your support. Your donations enable us to continue to help more horses.

::: How to Apply for Funds :::

After the Finish Line provides year-round financial support to qualified 501 (c) 3 non-profit rescue and retirement organizations caring for Thoroughbred horses that were bred to race. ATFL funds up to five equine organizations each month of the year based on our budget. We provide Emergency Funds (and Compassion Funds) to organizations located throughout the United States. If you are interested in applying, please review our Guidelines and follow the instructions.

::: Emergency Funds & Compassion Funds :::

After the Finish Line helped 112 horses in October by providing Emergency or Compassion Funds to three rescue organizations. Emergency Funds are for rescue organizations that directly request funding from us. ATFL contacts rescue organizations to offer Compassion Funds if we become aware of dire situations that overwhelm a rescue organization.

United Pegasus Foundation cares for 81 OTTBs. In total their horses have raced 1,433 times and earned over $9 million. The Thoroughbreds raced in California, New York, Illinois, Arizona, Washington as well as France and England. Their jockeys were the best in the business: Smith, Espinoza, McCarron, Bejarano, Baze and Talamo. United Pegasus Foundation has many mouths to feed. ATFL will award funds to help pay for their hay.

Humanity for Horses rescued Happy Gold when his owner could no longer afford to care for him. He had lifetime earnings of $1,000 racing at Fairplex, Del Mar and Hollywood Park over 20 years ago. Happy Gold was diagnosed with Cushings disease and has navicular syndrome. He requires medications, supplements, vitamins and special feed. ATFL will award funds to help support Happy Gold for 4 months.

ATFL is awarding Compassion Funds to Harmony and Hope Horse Haven. A major storm followed by flash flooding tore through the rescue. Much of their grain and hay was destroyed. Several of the horses developed hoof issues due to the water and muddy conditions. Rescued horses not suitable for adoption find a permanent, lifetime home at the rescue. They were bred in CA, New Mexico, Arizona and Kentucky and none won more than $35,000. ATFL will provide funds for grain, hay, hoof medication and will pay for farrier and dental expenses for all 30 OTTBs.

::: Merchandise :::

After the Finish Line’s custom caps are available in four colors; green, pink, black and stone at the ATFL Store link on our website. Our canvas caps are one size with an adjustable metal clasp. They feature our service mark, “A 501 (c) 3 funding non-profit for rescued Thoroughbred ex-racehorses” and our website, www.afterthefinishline.org. All proceeds benefit the rescue, rehabilitation and re-training of Off Track Thoroughbreds. They cost only $20 + $5 shipping. Show your support for the horses by purchasing an After the Finish Line cap.

::: Donations :::

Please include After the Finish Line when making your year-end charitable contributions. Donations are tax deductible and can be made by check, credit card or PayPal. ATFL was created to provide financial support to Thoroughbreds that are not wanted after their racing and breeding careers are over. Your donation will help save them from possible slaughter and neglect and allow these equine athletes to transition into second careers.

Sincerely,
