January 2017

Dear Friends of After the Finish Line,

In 2016 After the Finish Line awarded 64 grants to aftercare organizations helping 276 Thoroughbreds located in 16 states. Our grants helped to care for, rehabilitate and re-train the horses after their racing careers were over so they could transition into a second career or retire due to injuries or age. Thank you to everyone who supported After the Finish Line and helped us better the lives of all these Thoroughbreds. With your continued support, we will help even more horses in 2017. We appreciate your donations to our organization.

2016 marked the fifth year After the Finish Line awarded surprise Holiday Horse grants in the month of December. During our month long campaign of giving, ATFL awarded one grant each day to 20 deserving aftercare organizations. These organizations worked hard all year long to help the Thoroughbreds. This truly was a happy holiday for the organizations that received an unexpected surprise for the holidays.  We will continue this tradition in 2017.

After the Finish Line wants to thank the Georgia B. Ridder Foundation for honoring us with a grant. We are extremely grateful for this generous gift and proud to be recognized for the word we do to help Off Track Thoroughbreds. Their letter reads, “we make this gift to honor the Thoroughbreds who carried Mrs. Ridders’ colors in her successful breeding and racing careers and to remember Mrs. Ridder and her contributions to Thoroughbred racing.” These funds will help California bred horses that raced both in state and throughout the United States.

::: How to apply for Monthly Emergency Grants :::

After the Finish Line was the first funding organization to award Monthly Emergency Grants when we began in 2007. We support Off Track Thoroughbreds, Thoroughbred foals, Thoroughbreds in training but never raced and Thoroughbred broodmares and stallions used for breeding. ATFL provides grants for the following expenses: surgery, veterinarian, medication, farrier, dental, hay, feed, supplements, boarding, transportation and saving horses at auction. Please contact dawn@afterthefinishline.org to request our Guidelines.

::: January Monthly Emergency Grant :::

This month After the Finish Line awarded an Emergency Grant to the Square Peg Foundation for their OTTB named Cayambe. He was a stakes winner who earned $582,000 in his racing career. He was in training to be a therapy horse for people with autism and eating disorders. Square Peg believes Cayambe may have been chased by a mountain lion in his turnout pasture and jumped a fence to escape. His momentum took him through rocky terrain and thick brush to the bottom of a slope. This caused significant injury to his hind leg. ATFL’s grant will cover the emergency visit by the veterinarian and medications to prevent infection and ease his pain.

::: Fundraisers :::
After the Finish Line will host many fundraisers in 2017 to raise money for Thoroughbred aftercare. We will continue to host halter auctions throughout the year on our eBay Store site. We are also looking forward to our 7th annual Pacific Classic fundraiser at the Del Mar Race Track in August as well as our 2nd annual Charity Auction of Breeders’ Cup hats in November. We are planning a big fundraiser during the Del Mar Race Meet in July (TBA) and, possibly, a Breeders’ Cup fundraiser in November. Other fundraisers are also being planned.

We encourage you to contact After the Finish Line if you are looking for a rewarding volunteer experience. Please join the fun and help us raise money for the Off Track Thoroughbreds. Contact dawn@afterthefinishline.org for more information.

Sincerely,

dawn mellen
