Dear Friends of After the Finish Line,

Since 2007 After the Finish Line has been providing Monthly Emergency Funds to aftercare organizations across the United States. ATFL offers funding every month of the year because we understand horses need our help every day. Your generosity gives us the ability to help Off Track Thoroughbreds transition into a second career or retire due to injuries. Please consider giving a year-end donation of any amount. Thank you for supporting our efforts to help the Thoroughbreds.

::: How to apply for Monthly Emergency Funds :::

After the Finish Line awards Monthly Emergency Funds every month of the year to support Off Track Thoroughbreds, Thoroughbreds in training but never raced, Thoroughbred foals and Thoroughbred broodmares and stallions after they leave the Thoroughbred industry. We work with aftercare organizations across the United States that save, rehabilitate, retrain and re-home the horses for a second career or retirement. The funding can be used to pay the following expenses: saving horses at auctions, surgery or medical, farrier, dental or vet, hay and feed, boarding and transportation. Please contact dawn@afterthefinishline.org to discuss your funding needs.

::: Monthly Emergency Funds :::

Equine Encore cares for 78 Off Track Thoroughbreds at their ranch in Arizona. You can imagine how expensive it is to feed these retirees. Horses like Standard Setter, Soupy, Mostly Dusty and General Biltmore will benefit from After the Finish Line’s funding for their feed.

Thoroughbred Athletes, Inc. accepted JJ’s Hardwood into their program. JJ’s owner had hoped to use him as a pony horse after he retired from racing but the horse was not sound enough for this work. With the help of his prior trainer, JJ was relinquished to the aftercare facility instead of going to auction. JJ is a 4 year old gelding foaled in Kentucky. He had 25 starts at 8 tracks earning $14,700. ATFL provided funds for JJ’s hospitalization to treat his abscess. After he recovers, ATFL will provide funds for surgery to remove a bone chip and repair an old fracture.

::: Take Me Home :::

After the Finish Line received a grant for $12,000 in June to save slaughter bound Thoroughbreds.  We call this rescue program, "TAKE ME HOME". We worked with aftercare organizations to save the lives of 6 horses. We recently helped to save four more horses.

Whistle Included was rescued from auction. He earned over $128k racing 46 times with 5 wins, 6 places and 10 shows. He was vanned off the race track this past July. When Omega Horse Rescue had his ankle X-rayed, they discovered his ankle was damaged from racing and he could not be kept comfortable. Whistle Included was humanely euthanized

Some One’s Secret was rescued by Changing Fates Equine Rescue in October. This 13 years old mare only had three starts and never hit the board. Her last race was at Charlestown.

Festa Time was saved from auction in September. He had 27 starts racing and earnings totaling $42k. When his owner passed away, he was re-homed and re-trained for a hunter career. He was found at the auction by Omega Horse Rescue and saved with our grant funds. Festa Time was recently adopted to his forever home.

In September we helped to save Annabel Lee. Omega Horse Rescue was not planning to rescue a horse at auction. They noticed that someone had intentionally cut the tattoo, with a razor blade, on the upper lip of the horse named Annabel Lee. The horse received medical treatment at New Bolton Center. Her lip has healed and she is in training for a hunter career.

Charity Auction of Breeders’ Cup Hats

After the Finish Line is hosting a Charity Auction of Breeders’ Cup Hats through Saturday, November 19th at 3 pm PST. This is an eBay auction that includes 46 of your favorite racehorses that raced or were entered to race in the Breeders’ Cup. Each hat bears the name of the horse and is only given to the trainers and owners at this World Championship event. These hats are not available to purchase. Either bid on the hats of your favorite horses or bid on them because you like the name. The hats make great gifts for a racing fan or a sports memorabilia collector.
