August 2016

Dear Friends of After the Finish Line,

After the Finish Line is receiving more funding requests than ever before. Aftercare organizations across the United States rely on the funding we provide each and every month. Your donations give us the ability to provide funds for Off Track Thoroughbreds to transition into a second career or retire due to injuries. Thank you for supporting our efforts to help the Thoroughbreds.

::: How to apply for Monthly Emergency Funds :::

After the Finish Line awards Monthly Emergency Funds every month of the year to support Off Track Thoroughbreds, Thoroughbreds in training but never raced, Thoroughbred foals and Thoroughbred broodmares and stallions used for breeding. We work with aftercare organizations across the United States that save, rehabilitate, retrain and rehome these horses for a second career or retirement. The funding can be used to pay the following expenses: saving horses at auctions, surgery or medical, farrier, dental or vet, hay and feed, boarding and transportation. Please contact dawn@afterthefinishline.org with your funding needs.

::: Monthly Emergency Funds :::

Red Bucket Equine Rescue asked for funding assistance for Easter Prospect. He is a 10 year old bay gelding who had 7 starts in 2009 earning $1,700. He last raced at Los Alamitos before he bowed both front tendons. After his rehabilitation, Easter Prospect was injured in his stall and became a therapy horse. Sensing he wanted to do more, the organization wants to train him for another career as an English, Western or trail horse.  After the Finish Line will award funding for three months of training.

Beyond The Roses Equine Rescue cares for 17 horses. Their horses range in age from 3 to 28 years of age and their earnings range from $0 to $944k. They were bred throughout the east coast in Kentucky, Ohio, Virginia, Maryland and West Virginia. Half of them can go onto second careers while the others are permanently retired due to age or injury. Most were unwanted and rescued from the auctions. After the Finish Line will provide funds for farrier, bedding and hay for their 17 horses.

::: Take Me Home :::

After the Finish Line received a grant for $12,000 in June to save slaughter bound Thoroughbreds.  We will work with one aftercare organization each month through the end of the year to save the lives of 6 horses. This rescue program is called, "TAKE ME HOME".

In July we helped the first horse named Mom’s Dream. She earned over $100k racing before becoming a broodmare. She was found standing in a kill pen at the age of 17. Today, Mom’s Dream is living in a beautiful green pasture with her new horse friends.

This month we received requests from two aftercare organizations to save two Thoroughbreds. After the Finish Line couldn’t say no to one of the horses. We decided to match the grant and save both. We were able to save I’m On My Own from a California auction. She had been with a hoarder and given little food. For over a year the owner refused to give up the starved mare. She was recently sent to auction and was luckily purchased by Humanity for Horses. She has several leg issues and is dehydrated. Their vet will recommend treatments to help heal and nourish her body. At this point in her life, I’m On My Own will not transition into a second career. Instead she will be retired.

Later this month Changing Fate Equine Rescue will attend New Holland Auction in Pennsylvania. After the Finish Line will match the grant we received and award funds to save another Off Track Thoroughbred. We will share information about this horse shortly.
